Why I love the medicine of the breath
The breath is a unique bodily process, functioning both automatically and under our conscious control. It serves as a bridge between the body and mind, with the ability to lead us into our subconscious and reveal hidden emotions and experiences.
I personally love the breath because it gets me out of my thinking mind, where I used to dwell most of the time. Through specific breathing exercises, like conscious connected breathing, we can walk this bridge into our subconscious and tap into our intuition and discover the wisdom residing within us. This wisdom that is inaccessible through the mind alone, as it resides in our bodies, hearts, and subconscious.
The breath serves as a beautiful guide, I truly cherish its transformative power. It really helped me to connect more deeply with myself. And I hope it can do the same for you.
What is conscious connected breathwork?
Breathwork is a therapeutic technique that uses simple breathing practices to lead you into a non-ordinary state of consciousness where unconscious and previously repressed ideas, sensations and emotions can more easily rise to the surface for integration.
Conscious connected breathwork is a powerful practice that involves consciously and continuously breathing in a connected manner, without pausing between inhalation and exhalation. It is a dynamic process that utilizes deep, rhythmic breathing patterns to create a state of relaxation and increased self-awareness.
During a conscious connected breathwork session, individuals are guided to breathe in a circular or wave-like motion, typically through the mouth or nose. The breath is deep and full, with an emphasis on fully inhaling and exhaling without holding the breath. This continuous flow of breath creates a natural rhythm that allows for the release of physical and emotional tension.
The practice of conscious connected breathwork works on multiple levels. Physically, it helps to oxygenate the body, improve circulation, and stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes relaxation and reduces stress. Emotionally, it provides a safe space for individuals to explore and release suppressed emotions, trauma, and energetic blockages. Mentally, it can enhance clarity, focus, and creativity.
Conscious connected breathwork is often conducted in a group setting or with the support of a trained facilitator. It can bring significant improvements in mood, anxiety, sleep, and dysfunctional thought and behavior patterns. In the context of grief, trauma, and PTSD, Breathwork offers a safe container in which to experience, process, and ultimately release traumatic or difficult memories stuck in the body, through the body. Increased level of presence, shifts in perspective and release of trapped memories and emotions, all lead to a dramatic reduction of stress and anxiety levels.
Breathwork help develop neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to develop new neural pathways to reorganise itself. By changing the way we breathe, we can change the way we think, act and behave through strengthening a new pathway.
Finally, Breathwork helps is by toning the vagus nerve. With repeated practice, your parasympathetic system becomes strengthened and sympathetic activation becomes less frequent, leading to an inner calm and increased resilience. Every breathwork widens our window of tolerance for our nervous system to gradually hold more and more charge.
Contraindications for conscious connected breathwork
If any of these health conditions apply to you, you should speak with your doctor prior to practicing:
Cardiovascular or heart disease
Detached retina or glaucoma
Diagnosed brain or abdomen aneurysm
Diagnosed mental healt issues (e.g. bipolar or schizophrenia)
Uncontrolled diabetes or thyroid conditions
High blood pressure
Pregnancy - especially 1st and 3rd trimester

Each Breathwork journey will be unique, and your experience can range vastly from session-to-session. However, there are some common experiences that can arise in this modality:
The physical experience with conscious connected breathing
In consciously increasing the depth and rate of respiration, there is a temporary activation of the nervous system / arousal to support the release of accumulated stress in the body which are energies of the fight/flight/freeze response. Oxygen and carbon dioxide levels also temporarily shift, and the circulation of prana ("life force" Sanskrit) in the body is increased. It’s common to experience a feeling of “buzzing” as a result, as well as energy that can be released in the forms of involuntary body movements (shaking, trembling, etc.), yawning, changes in body temperature, or some shifting sensations in the body.
The emotional experience with conscious connected breathing
Most people experience chronic suppression of emotions. Additionally, at an early age most people developed strategies to manage overwhelming experiences. Emotional energy is often exiled in the body and psyche, and conscious deep breathing can often bring it to the surface for healing and integration — think of it like a release valve. It’s common to tap into grief, joy, love, sadness, anger, and even fear. Within a safe container and consciously engaged practice for healing and harmony, we can allow these energies to move through the system. In doing so, we can feel more at peace, with less internal discord and tension.
Visionary and transpersonal experience with conscious connected breathing
Breathwork is believed to dampen the “default mode network” of the brain, which can lead to a reduction in mental noise and rumination. The state is called "transient hypofrontality". This is when the prefrontal cortex goes offline. The analytical and critical mind for survival is switched off while powerful neurotransmitters for growth, love and peace come online. Often people experience this as a timelessness and transcendence of the ego-mind. In this state, insight, memory, or visions may arise. This can also be a time to have inspirations about new projects and creative endeavors. There is often an experience of drifting into a state of lucidity, like the space between wakefulness and sleep, and perhaps even an experience of deep stillness and peace.
